Chelsea won the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final, hosted at the Allianz Arena, Munich, by beating Bayern Munich 4-3 on penalties after the match finished 1-1 after extra time. The match was remarkable for the fact that Munich had taken a 1-0 lead with less than ten minutes left, only for the Blues to mount a comeback and level the score with just minutes left.
Build-up[]
Chelsea's 2011-12 Champions League campaign had been a very eventful one. It began on 13 September 2012 with a group stage match against Bayer Leverkusen- with the Blues prevailing 2-0. Going into the last game of the group stage- at home to Valencia, Chelsea required a win by at least three goals to progress to the knockout stage. They secured this with a convincing 3-0 win. The Blues however, suffered a 3-1 defeat to Napoli in the first knockout round. This meant that they had to win the second leg by a 3 goal margin. The second leg was Roberto Di Matteo's first European match as manager. Chelsea remarkably won the game 4-1 before being drawn against Benfica in the quarter finals. Chelsea prevailed thanks to a 1-0 win away from home and a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge. In the semi-finals, Chelsea were drawn against previous European Champions and four time winners Barcelona. The first leg at Stamford Bridge finished 1-0 and the Blues narrowly edged the return tie at the Camp Nou to a 2-2 draw. With that, Chelsea sealed their place in the final against German giants Bayern Munich.
This was only the second time Chelsea had reached the final of the European Cup, and the first since 2008 Champions League Final. Munich had narrowly lost out on their League title, whilst the Blues had finished a disappointing sixth. Both teams were allocated 20,000 tickets each for the match, however it is clear that many more Chelsea fans acquired tickets, and they vastly outnumbered their German counterparts.
