In late May 2012, Hazard confirmed on his official Twitter account that he would be signing for the Blues. On 4 June 2012, the signing was confirmed on chelseafc.com, for a fee of around £32,000,000 with a salary of around £170,000 a week. Hazard became the fourth Belgian player to sign for Chelsea, following the arrivals of Thibaut Courtois, Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne. After impressing on his pre-season debut, which also included a goal against Seattle Sounders, Hazard continued to catch the eye throughout pre-season. He made his competitive debut, starting in the Community Shield loss to Manchester City. A week later he made his Premier League debut, creating two goals in the first six minutes of a scintillating display against Wigan Athletic, first releasing Branislav Ivanovic with a defence-splitting pass, and then drawing a foul from Ivan Ramis to win a penalty.

He followed that up in the next game - a 4-2 win at home to Reading - by winning a penalty which Frank Lampard converted to break the deadlock, as well as laying on the fourth for Branislav Ivanovic. He scored his first Chelsea goal three days later from the penalty spot in a 2-0 win against Newcastle, while his first strike from open play came in the 4-1 win against Norwich City, when he finished off a quick counter-attack by scoring from Juan Mata's pass.

On 23 January 2013, the Belgian received his first red card as a Chelsea player in the Capital One Cup semi-final second leg against Swansea City following an altercation with a ball-boy, subsequently seeing him suspended for three matches.

On 30 August 2013, Hazard netted what looked to be the winning goal in extra-time in the 2013 UEFA Super Cup. However, the opposition scored a goal late on and the Blues eventually lost in a penalty shoot-out. On 6 October 2013, Hazard scored his first league goal of the season, scoring Chelsea's second in a 3-1 win at Norwich. Just over two weeks later, Hazard netted twice in a 4-1 win over Cardiff. On 22 October 2013, Hazard continued his good run of form, scoring Chelsea's third in a 3-0 Champions League win over Schalke. On 4 December 2013, Hazard scored twice and assisted Frank Lampard in a 4-3 win over Sunderland.
